At present, Gasum is the transmission system operator for the Finnish gas market, as well as importer and seller of natural gas. However, starting from 2020, Gasgrid Finland will be taking over the system responsibility. This operator is a new, state-owned company, which means that Finland is in line with the new Natural Gas Market Act to open the Finnish gas market for competition. Gasum will be unbundled from its operations by 1 January 2020.

The services of Gasgrid Finland include balancing services, the setup of virtual trading points and the organization of data exchange. They also provide a biogas certificate service so all market participants are able to purchase biogas, regardless of its physical location.

Currently, there is only one entry-point from Russia to supply the country with natural gas; but as soon as the Balticconnector pipeline is finished, market participants will be able to trade gas from different sources. Furthermore, another pipeline connecting Poland and Lithuania (GIPL – Gas Interconnection Poland-Lithuania) is scheduled to be finished in 2021.
